The Garmin Nuvi 300 Series

The Garmin Nuvi 300 series has 5 models including the Garmin Nuvi 300, 310, 350, 360 and 370.

The Garmin Nuvi 300 is slim, light and affordable GPS device. It has two flavor's, North American with preloaded maps for this continent of European versions with preloaded maps for certain European country or a region.

Garmin Nuvi 300 models come with City Navigator NT maps (NAVTEQ) pre-loaded into internal memory

The City Navigator maps contain information on highways, interstates, business and residential roads with attributes such as turn restrictions, speed categories and other navigation features. There is an SD expansion slot for adding other maps.

All of the Garmin Nuvi 300 models have multimedia entertainment capabilities including an MP3 player, Audible Book Player and Picture Viewer. The MP3 player has some useful menus enabling users to see album art and browse music by the artist, album, song or genre. Music can be dragged-and-dropped from the SD card. The Audible book player comes with a subscription to Audible.com from where you can download from their library of some 35,000 books.

Entering a destination by typing in the address or selecting a POI (point of interest). The map database features some six million POIs, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, entertainment, shopping, emergency services, post offices, camp grounds, movie theatres and ATMs. European versions can come with a preloaded safety camera database containing the location of safety cameras for parts of Europe.

To assist in finding an address there is a search facility allowing users to search for addresses and points of interest (POI).

Garmin provide a free preloader application for you to import customized POI. It provides the ability to upload POIs created by other's from your PC to your Garmin unit.

A useful feature is a proximity alert which notifies the driver of upcoming custom POIs. Up to 500 waypoints with name and graphic symbol can be entered.

The Garmin nuvi 350, 360 and 370 models have text-to-speech capable for reading out street names rather than just announcing the turn direction. It provides confirmation that you are on route without looking at the navigation display.

A SiRF Star III receiver chipset, provides the GPS capability for all Garmin Nuvi 300 models. The SiRF Star III chipset is a WAAS enabled for improved accuracy however, As we all know WAAS is not without it's problem's too, enabling WAAS, can result in no SAT pickup. Accuracy for the SiRF Star III is 2.0m for position and with 0.01m/s for velocity accuracy. Hot and warm autonomous times to first fix (TTFF) are less than 1s and less than 35s respectively.

Bluetooth technology enabled cell phones can be combined with the Garmin Nuvi for safe hands-free mobile phone. Incoming phone calls pop up on the display and a tap of the touch screen accepts the call. As with other systems, any other audio is automatically muted during phone calls. Calls can be made using the nuvi’s touchscreen keypad.

The Garmin Nuvi 300 series models all come with Garmin Lock which is an anti -theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until enter a specific 4-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location, called your security zone, this is where the lock you put on, would be not there in the exact location of the X and Y axis, you set as the safe zone.

Live traffic for automatic re-routing around traffic problems is available with an optional receiver and activation by a subscription.

It does have a connection for an optional TMC (traffic message channel) receiver: the Garmin GTM 10 TMC FM. That very same receiver also connects to the 350 without a problem.

They are much more than just a simple navigational system and contain several other funtions which might come in handy for all globetrotters. IE: they also play mp3 music files and audiobooks by the American company Audible. Photo's can also be displayed.

The Nüvi reserves 200 MB of it's internal memory for storage, but apart from that it can also read them from an SD-card. This is also true for the 350, but that unit has 650 MB of internal memory available for this. Then, there's also the unit's world clock, and a (currency) converter/calculator. But especially the tourist extra's are striking.

Those who drive at night will appreciate the night view of the Nüvi. During the day, the route is shown with a clear white background, and at night the backlight of the unit dims and a dark blue background colour is chosen. The Nüvi automatically switches between day and night view,

The Garmin Nuvi 300 is not only GPS device, it is also mp3 player, audio book player, currency converter, jpeg picture viewer, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also contains Garmin Lock and an anti-theft feature, World Bank and travel guide.

Word bank is useful feature if you intend to travel to different country and it contains nine languages and five bilingual dictionaries with included pronunciation of each word. Travel Guide has reviews and recommendations for tourist attractions, restaurants, fast food and more.

If you have traffic problems, the Garmin Nuvi 300 is a solution. It includes FM TMC traffic receiver that will notify you about any forthcoming road constructions or if traffic is stucked in a road ahead. It will automatically calculate another way to reach a wanted destination.

The size of this sat nav is comparable to one of those slimline digital cameras. It fits right in your pocket no problem. This combined with an easily removable suction cup mount are great, although the suction mount has a few problem's with falling off the windshield/screen,
